Why do you not focus on one art form or one style of painting?
Why do you not focus on one art form or one style of painting? . Surely if you focus on one art form and do it repeatedly you will get better at it.
This is a curious question that I am most often asked. To stay in one niche and focus intently on that one style, you may certainly become technically proficient , but do you run the risk of losing the courage of true creative artistic experimentation?.
I guess my answer to the question is that “Creativity supports and enhances Creativity “. All of the different art forms that I experiment with enhance my creative practice. I have used words in my artworks and I have also written a book, I paint, I draw and I have even brought designs onto textiles and different substrates. Essentially these different art forms make up who I am , and have become my voice. They tell the story of who I am as a person, the people I have met and the experiences I have taken part in. These all feed into the one creative vein and enrich my creative practise of making art.
Specialisation may work for a Lawyer or an Accountant where results come from measurable outcomes for a specific task. However art is symbiotic and you can find as a creative that you can actually learn more from interactions with different disciplines than if you limit your expression to one form of it.
Look at the great Leonardo da Vinci. He used a variety of mediums including experimenting with inks applied over charcoal and pastel underdrawings, oils, Tempera to name a few. But he not only painted he was also proficient in sculpting, architecture and engineering.
So if you as an artist feel stagnated or blocked. Perhaps trying something quite out of your creative comfort zone , you might just find that it helps and enhances your artistic practise.
